Medano Fire – Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve – June 17, 2010

National Park Service, Great Sand Dunes National Park: One minute video of footage showing the Medano Fire on June 17, 2010. This fire began as a lightning strike on June 6, and grew to over 3000 acres by June 18. While Medano Canyon is closed during the fire, the majority of the 150,000 acre park has not been affected by fire or smoke.

Fire is a natural and necessary part of a healthy forest. Occasional fires benefit forests by removing dead material, adding nutrients to the soil, and regenerating aspen trees and other species. Fire officials are carefully managing the Medano Fire for multiple resource objectives, while protecting cultural sites and private property.

    Thank you for …
Thank you for posting! This is so sad! I went on a field trip to these Dunes years ago! I now live in CA and we had really bad fires here three years ago, the smoke was awful and the homes that were lost are unbearable! I am glad you have included a positive article to put out this fire! Have a great day!
