Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve
The Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve comprises 201 acres and contains steep, undisturbed bluffs bordering the Congaree River. Located in Calhoun County, the preserve harbors significant stands of American beech, oak-hickory and bottomland hardwood forest. No comparable sites exist in the coastal plain of South Carolina. There are several other sites nearby on private lands, but these areas, along with the preserve, are unique. Similar systems in and around the Florida Panhandle have been documented to have the greatest number of trees per unit area within the temperate forest of the eastern United States. More than 100 species of trees, shrubs and woody vines exist in the preserve from the ridge base to the crest of the bluffs. Woody plants may number 200 species.

Rocky Point Preserve: A slideshow
The huge 5000+ acre Rocky Point state DEC preserve is one of the largest on Long Island. This is one of my favorite places to hike. The preserve lies in several municipalities…Rocky Point, Middle Island, Miller Place, and Ridge and stretches between rt.25A and 25. Here you will find a classic pine barrens habitat, as well as oak brush plains and a burn area throughout much of the preserve (burned in the 1995 wildfires) that is now recovering very well with many pine seedlings. There’s also a few ponds in the southern section of the preserve (south of Whiskey road).
A free permit is required here…you can get one from the NY State DEC.

Jonaszek at the Nopiming Game Preserve (Part 2)
This trail takes one through the Nopiming Game Preserve (a game sanctuary since 1920, whose creation was promoted by Macnamara). Nopiming is an Indian term meaning “in the woods.” It was originally intended to protect the beaver colonies living by the Ottawa River. Access to the preserve is courtesy of Honeywell Nylon Canada Inc., which owns the land. This trail is maintained by the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club.
The total distance for this trail is 3.7 km, with the Macnamara Nature Trail a further 4.5 km round trip.

Wainiha Valley, Kaua’i – The Nature Conservancy
An agreement between The Nature Conservancy and Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. will create Hawaii’s third largest private nature preserve at spectacular Wainiha Valley on Kaua’i, the two organizations announced today.
Located above Ha’ena on Kauai’s scenic windward coast, the new 7,050-acre preserve includes one of Kauai’s largest river systems, magnificent mountain cliffs and portions of the famed Alaka’i wilderness, and Mt. Wai’ale’ale summit region, one of the wettest spots on Earth.
