Season 1, Episode 8 Original Airdate: November 20, 1959

Starring: Burgess Meredith, Jacqueline DeWitt, and Vaughn Taylor

This episode was adapted from a short story by Lyn Venable printed in 1953. It’s the story of a man who loves books, yet is surrounded by those who would prevent him from reading them.

Opening Narration:
“Witness Mr. Henry Bemis, a charter member in the fraternity of dreamers. A bookish little man whose passion is the printed page, but who is conspired against by a bank president and a wife and a world full of tongue-cluckers and the unrelenting hands of a clock. But in just a moment, Mr. Bemis will enter a world without bank presidents or wives or clocks or anything else. He’ll have a world all to himself, without anyone.”

Closing Narration:
“The best laid plans of mice and men and Henry Bemis, the small man in the glasses who wanted nothing but time. Henry Bemis, now just a part of a smashed landscape, just a piece of the rubble, just a grafment of what man has deeded to himself. Mr. Henry Bemis in the Twilight Zone.”

And do you know what’s worse is that I can’t help but feel this really IS happening all over the nation… students who DO want to major in English or Philosophy are discouraged greatly by their parents, “be practical! Work for that retail job! Or nurisng or paralegal or electrician!” Overseas they still HAVE thetres people go to and great bookshops and the best authors and even still philosophers, still THOUGHT!

Now we have no smart books, TV… OR people! :/

    Now THAT’S television!

Star Trek TOS, House MD, Star Trek TNG, Twilight Zone, and Everybody Loves Raymond-

If I had all those epsidoes from those shows (getting there as it is) I might not ever watch TV today again except for sports, TV sans “House” and a couple other shows today being utter CRAP.

IT’S NOT FAIR! (LOVE IT!) ;)
