How to preserve the content and configuration of your Operating System?

I am currently running my Windows 2000 Professional SP4, and is wondering how to preserve the content and configuration of my Windows 2000 Operating System and any other Windows Operating System?
All contributions are welcomed. For accuracy, I would like all contributors to state the sources of where they obtained their information.

Are you talking about making a Disk Image? That would preserve all the contents. But if you want to make a backup, just use Microsoft Backup. Check the sources for more info on what you are looking for :)
