Roar is a 1981 film starring Tippi Hedren and Noel Marshall. In addition to starring in the film, Marshall also directed and wrote the film, producing it with entirely with his then-wife, Tippi.
Tippi’s real-life daughter Melanie Griffith plays her on-screen daughter, also named Melanie. Noel’s real-life sons John and Jerry also starred in the film.
On IMDb it’s defined “the most expensive home movie ever made”. The film cost $17 million and made only $2 million worldwide.
Hedren co-wrote the book Cats of Shambala (1985), about her experience of filming Roar.
The making of ROAR spanned a period of more than 5 years. It involved the remarkable talents of a crew of more than 100 dedicated men and women as well as the participation of more than 110 untrained lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs.
Add to that two elephants, twelve flamingos and eight ostriches… and the end product is nothing less than amazing.
Needless to say, a production of this sort places special demands on both cast and crew. Use the links on this page to learn about this incredible film and about the amazing people who made ROAR possible.
Learn about the extraordinary talents of actress Tippi Hedren, about her Academy Award winning daughter and co-star Melanie Griffith, and about award-winning cinematographer Jan De Bont, whose career in the United States began right here, on the set of ROAR.
Tippi Hedren still takes care of them, along with their offspring and many newcomers, at the Shambala Preserve in Acton, California. Tippi describes Shambala as a meeting place of peace and harmony for all beings, animal and human.
To sustain the high cost of providing a home for these animals, Tippi continues to raise funds through the Roar Foundation.
