I am graduating highschool this year and I wish to become an animal trainer/keeper. Before I go off to my first year of college, I want to volunteer at a wildlife zoo or preserve so I can have hands on experience. What would you recommend? I am researching everywhere…I am not sure where to start. Thankyou for your help!
It all depends on where you live. Is there a zoo in your area? Start with them. If not, try contacting a veterinarian or an animal shelter for suggestions and help. Are you able to travel? Then choose an area that you want to travel to and look for zoos in that area and contact them. Lots of places such as zoos may even be looking for summer workers.
Good luck!

The Humane Society is ALWAYS in NEED of volunteers. it would give you experience with animals, and you would help them take care of abused and abandoned animals until they are adopted.
It’s a nonprofit group with shelters all over the United States.
and you can get hands on experience.

I have volunteered for them, it was a great experience, very hands on.
The National Park Service is always looking for volunteers but because there are over 400 parks nation wide one does need to know the name of the park already. It would also be advisable to know which type of animal you want to train or keep since their behavior patterns are so different.
