A quick look to keeping your turtles shell after death.
1)Leave it outside in an open area so insects can do there thing.
2) Wait a couple months so the smells disappears and shell is completely cleaned.
3) Remove the bones and anything else that still might be left inside.
4) Clean inside with a toothbrush and take off scute if you want and brush outside of shell too with water.

Thank you! this video was great! I found a dead Painted turtle while Kayaking and being a collector of shells on the beach wanted to know how I might preserve this one’s shell. Your video is very helpful and has stopped me from making a mistake by boiling it or trying to cut the turtle out. I appreciate that you have used a natural way of preserving the shell and am glad I will be able to do the same.

Smell, well the two with the scutes have a slight smell, but you have to stick your noes right there to smell it. So bringing inside is okay.
The one without the scutes has no smell at all. I think the scutes is what has the smell.
