Having trouble with Borderlands since I installed the newest patch, so I am going to try uninstalling the whole game and reinstall it, but I don’t want to lose my characters. Is there a way to preserve my saves?

Generally when you un-install a game, your save files does not get un-installed. So you can continue the game later when you install them again.
Borderlands save games are located in :-
My Documents>Myr games>borderlands>savedata
Just take a backup of it before uninstalling it.
