After I cut up the meat into slices, how do I preserve it? Do I smoke and then sugar, or sugar and then smoke, or smoke and then salt, or salt and then smoke? Are there other ways to preserve the meat?

You ask how to preserve meat without a refrigeration.

Meat has been preserved for hundreds of years before the advent of refrigeration. Today the most popular ways of preserving meat include making jerky, which is basically a dehydration method, and the age old art of sausage making. Dehydrating meat for jerky and then storing it in an airtight package will keep the meat fresh for later use and is easy to pack. Sausage utilizes hog casings to create an airtight environment where spiced meat can be preserved without refrigeration for future enjoyment. Both methods allow you to experiment with herbs and seasonings to your liking so you can create your own customized preserved meats without the need for refrigeration.

Instructions

Make sure you trim as much fat as you can off of the meat you are using to prevent it from spoiling too soon. Fat is harder to dry and may store moisture in your meat that will cause it to spoil.

Marinate the trimmed meat in vinegar or in a marinade with salt to cure it. Let it sit in a cool, dry place overnight to really absorb the vinegar or marinade into the innermost parts of the meat.

Roll the meat in the herbs and seasonings of your choice. Herbs used include rosemary, thyme, black pepper, sage and parsley.

If you are making beef jerky, use small strips and load them into the tray of your food dehydrator so that they do not touch each other. It should take about 10 hours to fully dehydrate your meat.

If you are making sausage, you should load the meat into a meat grinder after it has been spiced. Pack the ground meat into the hog casing as tightly as possible and then twist the casing to make separate pieces, tying each one with twine and then wrapping it all in wax paper. Use natural hog casings for fresh sausage, although if you are using smoked meat, collagen or fibrous casings will do just fine.

Tips & Warnings
Marinating a second time in just salt will further dehydrate your meat, but may diminish the flavor of the vinegar or marinade that you use.

As a final project for a painting class, I make 3 oil paintings on panes of glass. The paint is dry now but I would like to preserve them. Is there a kind of epoxy resin that I could pour over top or is there something else I could put on them?
I am planning on giving one of them away as a gift and I don’t want her to have to put oil on the painting every so often.

Any advice would help. Thanks!

If your instructor assigned the project, ask him or her for suggestions on preserving the art work.

Are you planning on framing the art work? If so, ask the framer their recommendation. They may suggest to frame the piece under glass.

You must wait 6 months to a year until your oil painting is suitably dry before using any permanent preservative; yes, it takes that long. There are two or three products you might consider with which to varnish the art. Although I don’t see why they wouldn’t work, you should do a test on a separate piece. Try one of the Grumbacher Spray Varnishes, see http://www.dickblick.com/products/grumbacher-spray-varnishes , or Grumbacher Damar Spray Varnish, see http://www.dickblick.com/products/grumbacher-damar-spray-varnish , or Soluvar, see http://www.dickblick.com/products/liquitex-soluvar-varnish .

Best of Luck

There’s loads of these places around, here’s probably the safest free ones….

Google Docs – http://docs.google.com – 1Gb of free space – 1Mb to 20Mb individual file size limit depending on type
Dropbox – http://dropbox.com – 2Gb of free space – 300Mb individual file size limit
SkyDrive – http://skydrive.com – 25Gb of free space – 50Mb individual file size limit
Adrive – http://adrive.com – 50Gb of free space – 2Gb individual file size limit
Mediafire – http://www.mediafire.com – unlimited free space? – 200Mb individual file size limit

Do not put your files on any site known to contain a lot of illegal software and other files. People who used Megaupload for storing their own files found this out the hard way. Unfortunately for some the only copy of their files were on Megaupload’s servers when they were shut down.

As a result, when a slightly-thick layer of paint dried on the canvas (it is a primed/gessoed one), the paint cracked after it dried. Now, this is not completely terrible (because the painting still looks great), but I have been wondering whether there was a way to preserve this painting from cracking or degrading any further with some sort of coating or other material.

the bond may be questionable but acrylic varnish should be helpful. look for liquitex gloss or matte varnish. it will be milky white but will dry clear. this will be a permanent protective coating.

Like you I am not very traditional so when I wanted to preserve my wedding bouquet flowers I searched the web for flower preservation and memorial jewelry. I found this site www.isiskeepsakes.com. They can take your flowers, whether fresh or already dried, and create a keepsake for you. I had them make me a beautiful flower petal earring and pendant set for myself and had a bracelet made for my mother. Their jewelry is beautiful and unique and is much less expensive than freeze drying and I can wear my flowers forever.

If I were to use fruits in my masks and sell them to people, how would I be able to preserve my products????? HELP!

you need sterile jars, read about canning fruits and jams.
Clean hands and use pectin. It sets fruit and jellies to the gel state. It also protects the product from the outside.

protect your findings and you could make a fortune one day selling the item or rights to some one.

Honey is a great product for the face.

My Dad will have finished painting my 1964 EH Holden by next weekend. He has painted it black, and we’ve kept the roof white.

I’m after some advice on how best to preserve the paint job. Car covers, products that protect the paint while you’re driving, best washes/sponges/cloths etc, any advice at all from people who have had black cars or have classic cars.

wait at least 30 days until the paint cures out totally (or the shop who painted it says you can wax it. putting a good coat of wax is your best defense a car cover helps by keeping dust off and helps a lot because sun is the big butt kicker when it comes to damaging paint. Dark colors are much harder to keep clean. pick a day every other week to wash it, and use a brushless car wash or hand wash.
It is difficult to keep a paint job looking perfect for years, mainly you will learn how to do touch ups, you can fill i chips and wet sand smooth and keep it looking good, If you touch up, or pay a shop to touch up rock chips once a year the car will look good for a long time. Stuff happens, get over it now, there are people who scratch nice cars because they are cracked in the head, dont lose it in the parking lot if someone dings your baby, accidents happen, and if some hot babe dings it by accident, ask her on a date. and never let some idiot with no car, drive your car ok?
