Season 1, Episode 8 Original Airdate: November 20, 1959

Starring: Burgess Meredith, Jacqueline DeWitt, and Vaughn Taylor

This episode was adapted from a short story by Lyn Venable printed in 1953. It’s the story of a man who loves books, yet is surrounded by those who would prevent him from reading them.

Opening Narration:
“Witness Mr. Henry Bemis, a charter member in the fraternity of dreamers. A bookish little man whose passion is the printed page, but who is conspired against by a bank president and a wife and a world full of tongue-cluckers and the unrelenting hands of a clock. But in just a moment, Mr. Bemis will enter a world without bank presidents or wives or clocks or anything else. He’ll have a world all to himself, without anyone.”

Closing Narration:
“The best laid plans of mice and men and Henry Bemis, the small man in the glasses who wanted nothing but time. Henry Bemis, now just a part of a smashed landscape, just a piece of the rubble, just a grafment of what man has deeded to himself. Mr. Henry Bemis in the Twilight Zone.”

Introduction video filmed at Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio, on 2/6/2010. We had just had 6 inches of snow the night before, so the trees were covered with icey snow. Don’t miss the photos at the end of the video, as well! Music during photos is “Maybe I’ll Fall in Love”, produced by my dear friend and most excellent guitarist, John Behling.

What is the best way to wet preserve insects?

Posted by admin on February 13th, 2010 and filed under preserve | 3 Comments »

I have a large fascination with Entomology and would like to wet preserve the insects i catch. Currently i hold the dead insect in a dry container and after a short time, limbs break off and can no longer be viewed correctly. I wish to keep and catalog my specimens for study. What solution would preserve the specimen the longest, and at what ratio?

Industrial Methylated Spirit also known as ethanol, but you need a licence from HM Customs to have it. I have used Isopropanol Alcohol, but this hardens and can shrink the insect. I have added glycerol to IPA, but can’t say if this helped.

The limbs should not come off that easily, and you must keep dried specimens out of sunlight.

You can also use water soluble glue to fix insects to card, and details can be written on the card, and if glued correctly limbs can be displayed.

But why keep dead insects, there is more to entomology than just collecting, study of behaviour, habitat distribution, diversity and threats etc are far more important and more interesting.

Also with todays digital cameras there is less need to keep reference samples, and if you are due to the difficulties in identification you should also be looking at microscopic features using slides etc.

Please keep in mind the conservation ethics of collecting insects. Don’t take any more than needed. If you are collecting to build up a reference collection (for identifying species) see who else has done this and maybe share the collections. Speak to your local museum about this, as the curators would be very willing to help out in allowing you to use their collections as well as giving guidance and recording finds.

Do not collect insects for the sake of collecting as this can harm insect populations, but I’m sure as your fascinated with entomology you would not be actively harming insects or entomology itself by just collecting insects for display.
