Volcanoes are generally not preserved in the geologic rock record as they are eroded away. However, the various materials erupted from volcanoes are often found preserved in the rock record. How could you infer what type of volcano erupted in a given area based on the type of volcanic deposits now found as layers of rock? Give specific examples and briefly discuss if some materials may be linked to different types of volcanoes.

What is the best way to preserve very old pressed flowers?

Some time ago I purchased a bible at a flea market. It was given to an 8-year-old girl in 1910 and inside I recently discovered 12 four-leaf clovers. Nine of them have remained in tack. The other three have broken apart and the leaves have shredded. How can I preserve them remaining?

My father and grandfather used to put four-cleaf clovers on a piece of wood with an Irish good luck saying and varnish over the entire thing. The four-leaf clovers remained a vibrant green.

I don’t think this will work since the pedals are already so delicate. I would like to lay them on a piece of paper with the information about them but I don’t know if having them against the glass will further deteriorate them or if maybe a piece of vellum against the glass is the way to go.

Please help, I truly believe things like these should be treasured. Thank you!

How about trying 2 sheets of very thin acrylic. Or cellophane, you could buy that in stationery shop.

How do I backup PC video game CD?

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2009 and filed under game preserve | 3 Comments »

The CD I am talking about is a very rare one and I love that game. Therefore, I do not want to use original CD in order to preserve it for sentimental reasons. However, I do want to play the game that is why I want to back up the CD. Is there any legal way to do so? I have tried conventional software to copy it but it is copy protected.

Superdork has one way but there is a better way although it is not always possible. If you use a NoCD patch/crack then you have to store a copy of the original .exe file otherwise you have to reinstall the game if you want to install a patch. The method I use for at LANs so I dont have to cart all my CDs along is I use a mini ISO which I load into a virtual drive. This means that I dont have to mess with the game files and can install patches if one comes out. A mini ISO is a modified ISO (disk image) that contains only the data that the game requires to run from the CD. These are usualy hard to find and I dont know how to make them myself. If you do manage to find one use a program called Daemon tools which will alow you to load the ISO into a virtual drive and run the game without risking damaging the disk

What is the best way to wet preserve insects?

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2009 and filed under the preserve | 1 Comment »

I have a large fascination with Entomology and would like to wet preserve the insects i catch. Currently i hold the dead insect in a dry container and after a short time, limbs break off and can no longer be viewed correctly. I wish to keep and catalog my specimens for study. What solution would preserve the specimen the longest, and at what ratio? Where can i get the solution required as well as the glass vials i need?

Two kinds of solutions are most often used. 1. Ethanol at 70% is the least obnoxious to work with. I used this to preserve spiders, which have soft tissues and don’t preserve well dry. It helps to put a drop of glycerol in the vial to keep them soft and prevent immediate drying out if the ethanol evaporates. 2. 5% formalin is also a good preservative, but needs care in handling as it is toxic.

The one thing you will find with both of these is that the colors of the insects will mostly leach out. They tend to last longer in many cases with dry preservation. Not much to be done about it though.

I’d recommend the alcohol.

Here’s a site from an herbarium:

Is it possible to preserve vegetable soup?

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2009 and filed under preserve | 6 Comments »

I have a recipe with potatoes, leek. swede and other veges and I was wondering if it is possible to make it in bulk and then preserve it in jars. Does anyone know if this will work?

If you plan on canning low acid foods like the ones you mentioned you will need to use a pressure canner rather than the boiling water bath method.
Foods such as meats and low acid vegetables like leeks and potatoes require the extreme high heat that only a pressure canner can provide. The water bath method would be fine if the main ingredient of your soup was tomato based however I would lean to pressure canning over the water bath.
What pressure canning does is kill potentially deadly bacteria like botchulism etc

Unfortunate, you need a special type of canner and if you don’t plan on using it all the time, it’s probably not worth the investment in buying one. A really good one can cost over $100, but I have also seen them in thrift stores ect. Mine was given to me by my mother in law and I love it. The first time you use it, you think it’s going to blow up but you get used to it after that.

I have used it for a lot of things including 20 lbs of super fresh tuna given to me by a neighbor who loves to fish – just doesn’t like to eat fish. It doesn’t’ look too pretty in the jar, but the taste was soooo good!

There is a ton of information in the internet from various sources including university and government websites.

We will preserve our Azadi with honour and dignity – Azadi Parade August 14, 2009

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under preserve at | 7 Comments »

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani assured the nation that we will preserve our Azadi with honour and dignity, and from position of strength. Let no one underestimate the resolve of the Armed Forces, and, resilience of Pakistan nation, he said addressing the dawn of 63rd Indipendence Day of Pakistan Parade at the Military Academy here. He said we are a peaceful nation with no aggressive designs, However we are concerned at massive arms acquisition in the regions. He said that Azadi brings both liberty and responsibility. Azadi demands collective responsbilitiy to defend Pakistan, to further Pakistans interests and to serve our motherland. This demands of us to refocus on ideals of Quaid-e-Azam; that is Unity, Faith, Unity and Discipline. Let us therefore, he said, on this day pledge to the solidarity and territorial integrity of Pakistan. On this Azadi day, let us pledge to preserve and protect the Pakistan of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal. He said that the nation of Pakistan and its identity is based on Two Nation Theory. Islam is the soul and spirit of Pakistan. Islam is our strength. We are and shall always remain Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Inshallah. He emphasized that no extremist or terrorist can impose his distorted version of Islam through violent means. We, in Pakistan, are committed to defend our country against all external and internal threats. He said Pakistans current fight is against extremism and terrorism. This is not a fight based on religion, ethnicity, sub-nationalism, or provincialism. He said that a terrorist has not caste, creed and religion. He (Terrorist) respects no boundaries and has no nationality. Extremists are those who have blinded themselves in a self righteous mode and are not amenable to reason and logic. When this small majority resorts to coercion, through terror and violence, to impose their will on the majority, they run into terrorists. He said that the valiant nation of 170 million people will not bow down these handful of extremists. He said that Armed Forces of Pakistan have made tremendous sacrifices to rid the country of the menace of terrorism. Recent operations of Malakand Division are a clear examples of the will, determination and professionalism of the Armed Forces. Within a span of four months a complex military operation was conducted and concluded to establish writ of the Government. This was made possible only due to the unflinching support of the entire nation, and the great sacrifices made by the people of Malakand and the Armed Forces. He said that during the recent operations over 300 soldiers embraced Shahadat and over 900 others were wounded. In line with our proud traditions of leading from the front, 38 officers and JCOs embraced Shahadat and 61 were wounded. He acknowledged and paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of the soldiers and to their families who have displayed tremendous courage and pride in the sacrifice of their beloved ones. I salute the great mothers who rendered sacrifices. He said that this operation resulted in displacement of over 2.5 million people who endured this suffering with great sense of sacrifice and patriotism. He said most of those displaced people have returned to their homes and it was possible through comprehensive and integrated approach adopted by the Government and overwhelming support to the Armed Forces by the people of Pakistan and media. He cautioned against absolute notions, let it be clear that there is no notion of absolute victory in this struggle. Attempts to impose a pure military solution, through brute application of military force, is a dangerous and destructive propositions. Use of force should be the last resort and to the extent necessary to achieve peace, security and stability. This is our country, our motherland and the ultimate objective must be to reconcile and unite and not to divide and destroy. He said as the complexity of environment has increased, so have our challenges. Today our challenges are far greater and complex than ever before. We will require absolute faith, conviction and moral strength to stand our ground; and stand we must and stand we will, Inshallah. Earlier, he reviewed the parade and hoisted the National Flag to mark the occasion. Children presented national songs and accumulated thunderous applause from the participants who included senior Military Officers, their families, and families and next of kin of Shaheeds. It is the second time that the Azadi Parade is held at PMA Kakul and Pakistan is amongst a few nations which holds the night parade event. In the end of stunning event beautiful fireworks were displayed. [Courtesy: Associated Press of Pakistan]
